Custom Fireplace Installation in New Construction for Homes in Madison & Beyond

A custom fireplace isn’t just a heating source – it’s the defining feature of a well-built home. When you plan your fireplace installation during the initial construction phase, you gain full design flexibility, cleaner rough-in work, and lower overall costs compared to retrofitting an existing home. At Hansen & Sons Fireplace & Chimney, our certified installation team has been helping Madison-area homeowners and builders get it right for decades.

What Types of Fireplaces Are Available for New Construction?

New construction gives you the freedom to choose the fireplace system that best fits your home’s layout, lifestyle, and design goals.

  • Direct-Vent Gas Fireplaces: High-efficiency units that use a sealed combustion system to draw air from the outside through an exterior wall or the roof – without the need for a full chimney

  • Wood-Burning Fireplaces: Built-in systems that offer a more traditional setup with authentic aromas, crackling sounds, and high heat output – come in classic open-masonry designs or EPA-certified models for better efficiency

  • Linear Electric Fireplaces: Can be installed flush against standard drywall and wood framing without extra heat buffers – ideal for wide, contemporary spaces

When Should I Select My Fireplace for a New Build?

The earlier, the better. Fireplace selection should happen before framing begins. Each unit comes with specific dimensional requirements and clearance-to-combustible specifications that directly impact how your walls, floors, and ceiling are framed around the unit. Waiting until after rough framing is complete can lead to costly structural modifications or limit your product options.

Sharing your chosen fireplace model with your general contractor and framing crew early ensures the chase is built to exact manufacturer specifications from the start.

What Does the New Construction Installation Process Look Like?

A properly executed fireplace installation in new construction follows four coordinated phases:

  • Phase 1 – Planning & Selection: Choose your fireplace model and confirm all clearance requirements, vent routing, and utility needs before framing begins.
  • Phase 2 – Framing & Rough-In: Carpentry crews build the fireplace chase to manufacturer specifications, including proper headers, framing studs, and chase dimensions.
  • Phase 3 – Venting & Utilities: Technicians install gas lines, electrical supplies, and dedicated exterior venting runs in coordination with your HVAC and electrical teams.
  • Phase 4 – Finishing & Surrounds: Non-combustible facing materials, mantels, hearth surfaces, and final decorative trim are installed to complete the look.

Each phase builds on the last, which is why coordinated planning between your installer, builder, and trades team makes a significant difference in the final outcome.

What Technical Factors Should Builders & Homeowners Be Aware Of?

Whether you’re a builder or a homeowner managing the project, there are several technical considerations that affect safety, performance, and long-term durability:

  • Clearances to Combustibles Every fireplace model specifies exact stand-off distances between the unit and surrounding framing materials. These clearances are non-negotiable and must be followed precisely. In some cases, non-combustible framing studs or specialized headers are required by the manufacturer.
  • Chase Framing & Insulation Exterior fireplace chases must be fully insulated and properly air-sealed. An air barrier behind the unit prevents cold drafts from entering the living space and protects against energy loss — an important consideration for Wisconsin’s winter climate.
  • Finishing Material Selection: Not all wall materials can go everywhere around a fireplace. Be aware of non-combustible zones and combustible oznes, making sure you’re following proper clearances and using appropriate materials.

Important: Always verify the “Cool Wall” or heat-management clearance zones specified by the manufacturer before mounting televisions, artwork, or shelving directly above a fireplace opening.
